National park closes earlier to facilitate elephant feeding
Khao Yai National Park has decided to change its closing time in a bid to solve problems of wild elephants and tourists, Niphon Chotibarn, director general of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, said on Tuesday.
Starting from Thursday, the park will be open from 6am to 6pm instead of from 6am to 9pm, he said.
The new timings will remain in place until April and readjusted if they do not solve the problem.
During the New Year festival, the national park was crowded with tourists driving in and out and some found themselves facetoface with elephants wandering out of the forest. Some vehicles were damaged by the pachyderms but there were no injuries.
The park authorities are trying to solve the problems by limiting the time tourists can spend in the park after dark, when elephants usually go out in search of food.
