Belarusian News: Egypt, EEU agree to create free trade zone

CAIRO – Egypt and the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan have agreed to establish a free trade zone and to develop the Russian industrial zone in the Suez Canal region, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said after his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Cairo, BelTA has learned.

Apart from that, Russia and Egypt signed a number of documents, including on bilateral cooperation in nuclear power engineering. Attending the ceremony were Russian President Vladimir Putin and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

For example, Head of Rosatom Sergei Kiriyenko and Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker inked an agreement to implement the project to build a nuclear power plant in Egypt.

The agreement between Russia and Egypt in the field of nuclear power engineering not just provides for the construction of a nuclear plant, but actually creates a new branch of nuclear industry in the country, Vladimir Putin noted.

“Russia has a rich experience in this field and can share it with Cairo. Egypt would be very grateful for this, as it would help us satisfy our electric power needs,” Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi pointed out.

Head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund Kirill Dmitriyev and Egyptian Investment Minister Ashraf Salman signed a memorandum of mutual understanding and development of investment cooperation. According to the agreements, the Russian Direct Investment Fund will provide support to the Egyptian Investment Ministry at all the stages of the creation of the investment fund of the Arab country.

The visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Egypt was his first foreign trip in 2015.
