Argentina ranked 21st in list of secret HSBC accounts

Argentina ranked 21st in list of secret HSBC accounts

Argentine citizens sent some 3.5 billion dollars in the space of just two years to 2,552 undeclared bank accounts in the Swiss subsidiary of HSBC, ranking the country 21st in the world in terms of money stashed away in the financial entity.

Personalities from politics, showbusiness, sports and the business world appear on a list published by several international media outlets that revealed the hidden face of Switzerland's banking secret, with the data based on thousands of accounts hidden in HSBC's systems.

Dubbed 'Swissleaks' by the media, the investigation lays bare the extent of tax evasion and brings to light the financial manoeuvres used to hide undeclared, sometimes criminal, incomes.

The report released by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) found that a total of 3.5 billion dollars made their way to HSBC Switzerland from Argentina, establishing the country as the 21st-highest contributor. According to La Nación the No. 1 place on HSBC's ranking is filled by one Miguel Gerardo Abadi.

The Argentine accountant lives in London and is identified as a "manager" in investment fund Gems.

In Venezuela, meanwhile, the ICIJ names Alejandro Andrade, a former bodyguard to Hugo Chávez who was president of the Treasury Office between 2007-10 as well as ex-head of the Venezuelan National Economic Development Bank.
